The opening of your professor cover letter must grab attention immediately. Avoid generic openers like “I am applying for...”
Strong opening example:
“After leading a team that grew higher education output by 35% at [Company], I was excited to see [Company Name]'s opening for a Professor. Your focus on [specific company initiative] aligns perfectly with the work I've been doing for the past [X years].”
Weak opening to avoid:
“I am writing to apply for the Professor position I saw posted on your website. I believe I am a strong candidate...”
Demonstrate your command of key skills like Course design, Academic research, Grant writing. Use specific examples rather than vague claims. Hiring managers for professor roles want evidence, not assertions.
Every claim should have a number attached. Instead of “improved performance”, say “improved performance by 25%”. Professor positions are competitive — numbers make you stand out.
Communication and analytical thinking are highly valued in education roles. Show these through brief stories, not just adjective lists.
Your closing paragraph should do three things: reiterate your fit, show enthusiasm, and make a specific ask.
