A great cover letter for a technical lead position goes beyond restating your resume. It tells your story and explains why you're the right fit for this specific role.

The opening of your technical lead cover letter must grab attention immediately. Avoid generic openers like “I am applying for...”
Strong opening example:
“After leading a team that grew tech lead output by 35% at [Company], I was excited to see [Company Name]'s opening for a Technical Lead. Your focus on [specific company initiative] aligns perfectly with the work I've been doing for the past [X years].”
Weak opening to avoid:
“I am writing to apply for the Technical Lead position I saw posted on your website. I believe I am a strong candidate...”
Demonstrate your command of key skills like Code review, Architecture decisions, Team mentorship. Use specific examples rather than vague claims. Hiring managers for technical lead roles want evidence, not assertions.
Every claim should have a number attached. Instead of “improved performance”, say “improved performance by 25%”. Technical Lead positions are competitive — numbers make you stand out.
Leadership and communication are highly valued in technology roles. Show these through brief stories, not just adjective lists.
Your closing paragraph should do three things: reiterate your fit, show enthusiasm, and make a specific ask.
Reference specific technologies from the job description to show technical alignment.
